MAKE A HEALTHY HUMMUS FROM SCRATCH | TWO FLAVOURS

A wholesome accompaniment to crunchy snacks like carrots, hummus is a healthy 'protein, minerals and good oils filled dish. Though mostly bought off the supermarket shelf, today I share how to make your own completely from scratch, super easy and with good ingredients. You know what is going into your hummus, therefore no need to worry about additives. Below, I also share a video recipe as well as a step by step recipe with pictures. Here's how I make my hummus, two flavours, completely from scratch!

Hummus contains a lot of protein, minerals and good oils. Most of the protein comes from the chickpeas and the sesame seeds and a lot of the oils and minerals come from the sesame seeds. Transitionally, sesame seed paste (tahini) is used in making hummus, however, in this recipe, I share how to incorperate the sesame seeds as a whole in order to make your hummus more fresh and homemade. 

Ingredients
  • 50g of Fresh Sesame Seeds
  • A Tin of Chickpeas
  • 1 1/2 to 2 tbsp of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1/3 of a Teaspoon of Salt
  • 3/4 of Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • Two Cloves of Garlic

Hot & Spicy Hummus [Extras]
  • Black Pepper or Peppercorn
  • Red Pepper Powder e.g. Cayenne/Paprika

Tools
  • A Blender or Food Processor
  • A Measuring Cup
  • Saucepan
  • Spoon

 Lets Cook!
1. Turn your stove onto a medium heat to begin with and transfer the sesame seed into a saucepan on the stove. 
2. Stir the seeds and shake up the saucepan in order to get the seeds to be level and allow to cook for about 3-5 minutes.
3. Turn the stove to a high heat and allow the seeds to toast on one side without burning, for about 3 minutes or until the seeds start browning.
4. Once the seeds begin to brown on one side, begin to constantly stir the seeds and shake up the saucepan in order to allow the most of the seeds to toast.
5. Once the seeds are toasted, take the pan off the heat and allow the toasted seeds to cool down.

6. Drain and wash your chickpeas. Chop your cloves of garlic, and slice your lemon into halves.

7. Transfer your chickpeas into your food processor or blender.
8. Followed by 3/4 of your lemon juice, 1/3 of a teaspoon of salt and your chopped garlic.
9. Also transfer your 50g of toasted sesame seeds into the mixture and you are ready to blend.

10. Start by pulsing your mixture at intervals to begin the blending process.
11. After a few pulses, begin to add in the olive oil in little amounts at a time.
12. Then blend at intervals and add in the rest of your olive oil.
13. At this point, also add in about 5 tablespoons of water, and continue to blend at intervals.
14. Add in another 5 tablespoons of water and blend until mixture becomes like a paste and fairly smooth.

15. At this point, the mild hummus is ready. If you want to try out the hot & spicy flavour, tranfer half of the hummus into a storage container.

16. Into the other half of the hummus, add a pinch to 1/3 of a teaspoon of your black pepper or peppercorns and also 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of the red pepper powder depending on how hot you want it.

17. Give the spicy hummus a final few blends until fully incorporated or mix together with a clean spoon.
